Courtyard House, Barnet

A single-storey courtyard house is located on a sensitive backland site in the London Borough of Barnet. Designed to respect the privacy of neighbouring properties while creating a secluded, light-filled living environment, the project demonstrates how compact infill sites can be transformed into generous, sustainable homes.

Set low into the landscape with a green roof and carefully considered massing, the architecture minimises visual impact while enhancing local biodiversity. Large-format glazing and a planted central courtyard allow daylight to reach deep into the plan, while also creating a private and calming outlook from all rooms.

Sustainability is central to the design strategy — from the building’s passive solar orientation to its use of highly insulated construction, natural ventilation, and low-carbon materials. Renewable technologies such as air source heat pumps and rainwater harvesting are also incorporated, contributing to a low-energy, climate-responsive home.

This project exemplifies how thoughtful backland development can support both architectural quality and environmental responsibility within an urban setting.
