6th & Union – Nine Elms

Hospitality architects Nine Elms, Common Ground Workshop have completed a new speculative hospitality development at Unit 6 Embassy Gardens, featuring a restaurant, bar, and events space.

Situated on a prominent corner opposite the proposed Nine Elms Linear Park and adjacent to the American Embassy, this unit forms part of a wider urban realm masterplan encompassing approximately 45,000 sqft of commercial space and 8,000 sqft of retail across an 8-hectare site.

The development aims to create a unique destination for both local residents and visitors in the rapidly evolving Nine Elms area, enhancing the recently completed public realm at Embassy Gardens.

The interior design draws inspiration from the dynamic urban aesthetic of Nine Elms’ redevelopment and its location at the intersection of a rigid city grid and the softer landscape of the linear park opposite. The design blends hard and soft landscaping motifs through a tactile and textured material palette, juxtaposing industrial finishes with natural elements. A distinctive brick floor, extending across the full length of the space and continuing the high street’s curves, unites the various functions within the venue and doubles as a bar front arranged in a soldier course pattern.

The ceiling is finished with black wood wool panels and punctuated by a bespoke gridded lighting track featuring custom-made LED battens, emphasizing the space’s urban-industrial character. Complementing this, materials such as blackened steel and black polished plaster provide a rich variety of matte and gloss textures.

Softening the overall industrial feel, light rustic oak timber bar tops and joinery combine with high and low-level planting and muted green fabric cushions, creating a balanced and inviting atmosphere.
