Unit 6 – Embassy Gardens

Common Ground Workshop have completed a new speculative hospitality development including a restaurant, bar and events space at Unit 6 Embassy Gardens, Nine Elms. The space is located on a prominent corner opposite the newly proposed Nine Elms Linear Park and adjacent to the American Embassy building. The unit is part of a wider urban realm masterplan comprising circa 45,000 sqft of commercial space an 8,000 sqft of retail over an 8ha site.

The unit will create a unique destination for local residents and visitors in the rapidly changing context of Nine Elms, and seeks to enliven the recently completed public realm at Embassy Gardens.

The interior design and materiality takes its cue from an attractive urban aesthetic arising from the redevelopment of Nine Elms, and from the siting of the unit at the junction between a pervasive city grid and the softer linear park landscape located opposite the unit. The proposed interior design language seeks to blend hard and soft landscaping motifs into a material palate that is filled with tactile and textured surfaces set against harder more industrial finishes, reminiscent of the burgeoning infrastructure landscape at Nine Elms. A brick floor representing a continuation of the high street curves through the full length of the space from side to side and unites the different uses and functions: it has also been utilised as a bar front in a soldier course arrangement. The ceiling is clad in black wood wool that is punctuated by a gridded bespoke lighting track with drop-down custom-made LED light battens, further emphasising the urban and industrial aesthetic across the unit. Other material finishes such as blackened steel and black polished plaster work in harmony to offer a variety of darker textures varying between matt and gloss finishes.

In contrast light rustic oak timber bar top and joinery, high and low level planting and a blend of muted green fabric cushioning serve to soften the pervasive harder industrial design features.
