Whitechapel House

Common Ground Workshop have completed a sensitive renovation of a four storey Grade II Listed property located in Whitechapel, London.

Formally a large 4 bedroom rental property for staff at the The Royal London Hospital, the development brief called for a sensitive re-think and overhaul of the tightly-planned interior and exterior spaces to provide a contemporary high-specification single family home. Our approach to the project brief sought to work carefully with the built fabric, complementing and enhancing the existing historical features and detailing throughout. The property has now achieved practical completion and is currently for sale on ‘The Modern House’.

The works included achieving planning and listed building consent internally and externally via two applications. Undertaking modest structural alterations to reconfigure living and dining spaces at Ground and Lower Ground floors, we were able to maximise opportunities for access to external courtyard spaces and roof terraces throughout.

At Lower Ground Floor a distinctive material Palette of marble, stained sapele and chevron oak flooring sits alongside lime painted existing masonry, renovated fireplaces and hearth tiling, and high specification feature lighting, creating a classic and timeless family kitchen and dining experience. Removing part of the rear façade and widening the structural aperture has allowed for direct access to the rear courtyard at this level, providing an extension of the kitchen and dining experience, and for an abundance of light to reach this existing lower ground floor level.

At the Ground Floor level an extensive storage wall has been installed to tidy up and simplify the party wall elevation in the primary living space. Contemporary lighting and refined wall detailing to the entrance lobby and stairwell further providing a classic and high-quality user experience at this level. Two bathrooms off of the half landings have been overhauled and modernised, consisting of contemporary green ceramic tiling, green Valchromat and rose-gold fittings. Externally the façade details, including windows and doors at all levels, have been fully renovated and redecorated in an attractive and distinctive heritage paint finish.

The scheme is one of a number of recent appointments to work with Listed, locally listed and buildings requiring a conservation-lead approach.
